Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has seized 5,964 bottles of expired soft drinks allegedly intended for sale to unsuspecting members of the public at Singer Market in Kano.
The action followed a report received by the council that a trader had stocked a large quantity of soft drinks which expiry dates had elapsed.
Acting on the information, the council swiftly deployed its enforcement officers to the market to investigate the matter and ensure that the products did not reach consumers.
The council reiterated its commitment to carrying out its responsibilities without fear or favour, assuring the public that it would continue to monitor markets and track down expired and substandard products across state to protect consumers’ rights and interests.
Commenting on the development, the director in charge of the council’s Enforcement and Removal of Substandard Products Department, Alhaji Auwalu A. Muhammad, stated that the Council was carrying out its duties in accordance with the law.
He explained that the Council would not hesitate to confiscate any product that had expired or whose essential information on the packaging had been tampered with, in order to remove such products from circulation.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, reaffirmed the Council’s determination to sustain enforcement operations across markets, business outlets and supermarkets to identify and remove expired, damaged and substandard products.
He further stressed that the Council would not tolerate any form of harassment or intimidation of its personnel, noting that the officers were carrying out their lawful duties to protect the health and safety of residents of Kano State against illnesses that could result from consuming unsafe and expired products.
Dr. Ibrahim also called on traders to support the Council’s efforts by voluntarily identifying and removing expired or damaged products from their shops rather than concealing them or attempting to alter their expiry dates.
Dr Ibrahim noted that such cooperation would not only safeguard consumers’ health but also promote the growth and credibility of their businesses.
Finally, the Executive Secretary commended the Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his continued support and commitment to providing the Council with the necessary backing to effectively discharge its responsibilities.
