Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged commissioners of Information in All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled states to strengthen collaboration and coordinate communication strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Idris, who is the coordinating director for Media and Strategic Communication of the APC 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, made the call yesterday in Abuja during a meeting with APC commissioners of information across the country.
He stressed the need for consistent messaging among government officials and party spokespersons to effectively communicate the policies and achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The minister described effective communication as a critical instrument of governance, saying Nigerians needed to understand the objectives, challenges and expected benefits of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said the government’s reforms were aimed at strengthening the economy, expanding opportunities, improving infrastructure and advancing national development.
“Effective communication is no longer optional. It is an essential instrument of leadership, governance and public engagement,” he said.
Idris urged the commissioners to strengthen communication networks between federal and state institutions, share verified information and deploy traditional and digital media platforms to reach citizens.
He also cautioned against misinformation and disinformation, stressing that credibility, transparency and responsible engagement were essential to sustaining public confidence.
“Our greatest asset is public trust, and that trust can only be sustained through accuracy, transparency, consistency and responsible engagement,” the minister said.
He further emphasised the importance of listening to citizens, understanding public sentiment and incorporating feedback into government communication strategies.
Describing the meeting as an opportunity to build a sustained partnership among information managers, Idris said effective government communication must involve listening to the concerns of citizens.
“Effective communication is a two-way process. We must pay attention to citizens’ concerns, understand public sentiment and ensure that feedback informs how government engages with the people,” he said.
The meeting was attended by 20 Commissioners of Information from APC-controlled states, with discussions focusing on strengthening intergovernmental communication, information coordination and public engagement.
