President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos on their victory over Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, urging the team to go all out for the trophy against Japan.
The President described the team’s qualification for the final as a remarkable achievement that had brought pride and joy to millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also commended the players, coaching crew and other members of the team’s support staff for their efforts throughout the competition.
With the Flamingos set to face Japan in the final, the President urged the players to maintain the fighting spirit, confidence and determination that had taken them this far.
He expressed confidence in their ability to win the title and make history for Nigeria.
“I encourage you to approach the final with the same fighting spirit and belief that have brought you this far. I have confidence in your ability to make history by winning the coveted world title,” Tinubu said.
The President also called on Nigerians to rally behind the team, describing the young footballers as ambassadors whose achievements were showcasing the country’s sporting potential and inspiring a new generation of girls to pursue their dreams.
“Once again, Nigeria is proud of you. Go for the trophy, Flamingos!” he added.
Nigeria booked their maiden appearance in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final.
The Flamingos will face Japan in the final as they seek to become the first Nigerian women’s team to win a FIFA World Cup title at any level.
