Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has said former military ruler, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, played a decisive role in restoring Nigerians’ confidence in democracy during a period of deep political uncertainty in the country.

Gowon made the remarks on Saturday in Abuja at the public presentation of three books in honour of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, held at the Presidential Villa as part of activities marking his 84th birthday celebration.

He said Abdulsalami’s leadership following the sudden death of General Sani Abacha in 1998 provided the stability and reassurance the country needed to navigate a delicate transition period.

“You came to office at a very delicate moment for Nigeria, when the country needed calm, reassurance and a clear sense of direction,” Gowon said, adding that Abdulsalami’s stewardship “helped create the confidence that such a path was still possible.”

According to him, the quick decision by Abdulsalami to transition power back to civilian rule within 11 months was a historic act that reshaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“In choosing to organise elections and to hand over power within 11 months, you did something of lasting significance for our country,” he noted.

Gowon stressed that the former Head of State was able to manage competing interests within the military and political class at the time because of his credibility and leadership style.

“You were able to carry both the military establishment and political leaders through that transition because your approach inspires trust,” he said.

He added that Abdulsalami’s post-service contributions have continued to reinforce his role as a stabilising figure in Nigerian politics, particularly through advocacy for dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflict.

“Over the years, you have remained a respected voice for dialogue, for peace, and for the patient work of building peace in Nigeria and across the continent,” Gowon said.

The former Head of State concluded by commending Abdulsalami for his service to the nation and wished him continued good health and long life as he marked his 84th birthday.
