Abia State government has announced modalities for distributing the federal government’s food palliatives allocated to the state to ease the economic hardship on civil servants in the state.

The commissioner for information and culture, Okey Kanu, stated this when he briefed the press on this week’s executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the state capital.

“Before now, we have focused on the vulnerable ones in the society. At every turn, we try to give the palliatives to those who need them most,” Kanu assured.

He said of the 65,000 bags of 25kg rice allocated, 24,000 had been delivered and 12,971 would be distributed to civil servants on Grade Levels 01 to 07 in the first phase.

“The expected 36,000 bags, when delivered, will be distributed to civil servants on Grade Levels 08 – 10.”
He announced that the state has about 663,000 and 79.9 metric tons of maize and garri respectively which translate to about 13, 260 and 3,196 bags of 25kg each.

In his contribution, special adviser to the governor on policy and interventions, Rev Father Christian Anokwuru, said the state had not receive palliatives from Dangote Foundation as promised.
Anokwuru, however, added that nevertheless, the state was still hopeful of taking delivery of them “as we have received official mails to that effect.”
