Cancer survivors, health professionals, policymakers and residents have called for increased awareness, regular screening and early detection to improve cancer prevention and treatment outcomes in Nigeria.
The call was made at the 12th edition of Walk Away Cancer, held on Saturday in Abuja under the theme, “One Walk, One Fight,” as part of activities marking the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, popularly known as Pink October.
The 5km awareness walk began at Monoliza Park in Area 11, Garki, and attracted participants from all walks of life.
Led by Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), former First Lady of Kebbi State and President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the event featured testimonies from cancer survivors, goodwill messages and public awareness activities.
According to her, “Cancer remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with late diagnosis and the high cost of treatment posing significant barriers to survival.”
The campaign highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, access to screening services and public education in reducing the burden of cancer.
At the event, participants accessed free health services, including clinical breast examinations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, hepatitis testing and eye screenings. Young girls also received Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations to help protect against cervical cancer.
The organisers said the activities were aimed at encouraging people to take preventive health measures and seek medical attention early rather than wait until symptoms become severe.
The awareness campaign followed a solidarity visit to cancer patients at the National Hospital in Abuja on Friday, 30 October.
They called for sustained public awareness, improved access to screening and stronger support for people living with cancer.
