A 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command over the alleged killing of her newborn son with a razor blade in the Jabi area of Abuja.
The tragic incident came to light on 4th October, 2026, when residents discovered the lifeless body of a male infant abandoned in a bush in the Jabi area.
The police said a distress call was received at about 10:30pm, prompting operatives from the Jabi Police Division to rush to the scene.
The baby, who was found with deep wounds to the throat and abdomen, was taken to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save his life, but medical personnel confirmed him dead.
What began as the discovery of an abandoned infant soon turned into a disturbing investigation that led detectives to the baby’s mother.
Following the discovery, the FCT commissioner of police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered a manhunt for the person responsible for the baby’s death.
With assistance from members of the community, police investigators traced and arrested Yohanna, who is from Riyam in Sanga local government area of Kaduna State and lives in the Daki-Biu/Jabi area.
FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said preliminary investigation revealed that Yohanna gave birth to the baby inside her room on 3rd October, at about 4pm—just a day before the child’s body was discovered.
The command said shortly after giving birth, she used a razor blade to inflict the injuries that later claimed the newborn’s life.
Meanwhile, in her account to police investigators, the suspect allegedly said she committed the act because of hatred for the child’s father.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged killing have raised questions about what transpired in the hours between the birth of the child and his death, as police continue their investigation.
The Commissioner of Police condemned the incident as a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and commended residents whose assistance helped identify and arrest the suspect.
Sanusi said the Command would conduct a thorough investigation and assured that the suspect, who remains in police custody, would be charged in court once the investigation is concluded.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or incidents to the nearest police station or through the FCT Command’s emergency lines.
