Warring Bachama and Chobo communities have signed a peace accord to end the lingering communal crisis which has claimed many lives in Adamawa State.

Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri,  presided over the ceremony in Yola, yesterday.

The meeting, which was held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Yola, brought together representatives of the two communities alongside security agencies and other key stakeholders.

Declaring the end of hostilities, Governor Fintiri said there was “no victor and no vanquish”, stressing that the accord marked a new beginning for peaceful coexistence in the area.

The governor described the conflict as unfortunate, noting that it was disheartening for communities which had lived together for decades to be drawn into violence.

He attributed the crisis to forces that disrupted peace, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.

As the chief security officer of the state, Governor Fintiri said the crisis had caused him sleepless nights, but expressed gratitude to God that peace had finally been restored.

He announced the relaxation of the curfew earlier imposed on Lamurde local government area, now allowing free movement from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The governor also assured victims of the crisis that the state government would support them through rebuilding and rehabilitation initiatives to restore normalcy to the affected communities.

Earlier, the executive vice chairman of the State Peace Commission, Dr. Jimila Suleiman, explained that the meeting was convened after a series of engagements chaired by the governor aimed at resolving the Lamurde crisis.

She noted that sustained dialogue led to concrete resolutions, culminating in the signing of the peace agreement.

Dr. Suleiman added that both communities demonstrated readiness to embrace peace and had shown firm commitment to the terms of the agreement, which seeks to end the recurring clashes that erupted on July 27, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of their respective communities, Danbaba Rugange of Bachama and Zakaria Ibrahim of Chobo pledged to uphold the peace accord and ensure harmonious coexistence.

They reaffirmed their commitment to returning peace to Lamurde and preventing future conflicts.

The meeting concluded with the formal presentation of copies of the signed peace agreement to the representatives of the Bachama and Chobo communities, marking a significant step toward lasting peace in Lamurde local government area.
