ADC VP Slot: Eze Disputes Momodu’s Claim, Says Amaechi Has Not Rejected Running Mate Offer

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has dismissed comments credited to party stalwart Dele Momodu suggesting that former Rivers State Governor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, had rejected the party’s vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement posted on his verified social media accounts on Thursday, Eze described Momodu’s remarks as personal opinion capable of creating unnecessary tension, mistrust and misunderstanding within the party.

Eze said there was no basis for concluding that Amaechi had turned down any such offer, maintaining that the former minister had not publicly or privately declared that he would not serve as running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, Amaechi’s previous comments after the ADC presidential primaries had only indicated that no one had approached him regarding a vice-presidential position.

Eze argued that such a position should not be interpreted as a rejection of any future arrangement.

He stated that Amaechi had consistently maintained during the primaries that he sought the party’s presidential ticket based on what he described as his political experience and record in public office.

The former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) urged party members and supporters not to speculate on political negotiations involving leading figures within the opposition coalition.

He called for restraint and advised against actions that could affect internal cohesion within the ADC.

Eze also expressed confidence in the political relationship between Atiku and Amaechi, describing both men as leaders capable of contributing to efforts aimed at strengthening democratic governance.

According to Eze, discussions about future political alignments should be allowed to evolve without unnecessary public pressure.

He further argued that contesting against Atiku in the party’s presidential primaries should not automatically exclude Amaechi from consideration for any future role within the party’s electoral plans.

His comments followed remarks made by Momodu during a television interview on June 8, 2026, where he spoke about possible political arrangements within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

During the interview, Momodu reportedly said that Amaechi had indicated he would not accept the vice-presidential slot, while discussing possible scenarios following the ADC primaries.

Eze, however, maintained that the remark reflected an interpretation of Amaechi’s earlier position and should not be taken as a definitive rejection of any future vice-presidential consideration.

He added that what should take priority for the opposition is building consensus and focusing on governance issues ahead of the 2027 elections.
