Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has paid tribute to Nigerian workers, particularly FIRS staff, for their resilience and critical role in national development.

In a Workers’ Day message signed by his Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Adedeji described the annual celebration as a moment for deep reflection, not just routine well-wishes.

She noted that this year’s message goes beyond formalities, serving as a sincere recognition of the sacrifices and dedication of workers at FIRS and across the country.

“As we celebrate Workers’ Day, we must ask ourselves what it truly means to be a worker in Nigeria today. Are our workplaces improving? Are employees being treated with dignity and rewarded for their contributions? These are the real issues leaders must address,” Atoyebi stated.

Under Dr. Adedeji’s leadership, significant reforms were implemented to improve staff welfare and promote a sense of purpose among employees. According to Atoyebi, the days of rare and anxiety-inducing promotions are over.

In their place is a new, transparent performance-based promotion system introduced last year, which has reinvigorated morale and brought fresh energy to the service.

“For the first time in years, workers feel recognised and motivated. There’s a renewed sense of pride and ownership in their roles,” she said.

The shift has led to a more supportive and engaging workplace culture across FIRS offices nationwide. Staff now show up not just out of obligation, but with confidence and enthusiasm, bolstered by improved working conditions and more responsive leadership.

Adedeji praised FIRS workers’ contributions to revenue generation and national development and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a fair and rewarding work environment.

“As we mark this year’s Workers’ Day, FIRS stands out as an example of what’s possible when leadership prioritises people.
