Egbe Urges NFF To Add Pitch Intelligence To Super Eagles Preparation

As the Super Eagles intensify preparations for Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar in Uyo, certified hybrid pitch technician Ebi Egbe has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make playing-surface intelligence a key part of the national team’s match preparation.

Egbe, the Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Sports Facilities Construction Ltd., made the recommendation in a technical document addressed to the NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, arguing that the playing surface can have a significant impact on players’ performance.

In the document, titled “Recommendation for Pitch Specific Player Preparation and Match Environment Intelligence for the Super Eagles,” Egbe said modern football preparation should extend beyond analysing opponents and individual player capabilities to include detailed assessment of the pitch where matches will be played.

He identified ball roll and rebound, passing speed, acceleration, traction, turning, fatigue, tactical tempo, surface hardness, moisture, drainage and weather conditions as factors capable of influencing the way players perform.

Egbe consequently recommended that the Super Eagles technical crew receive professional pitch assessments before competitive matches to help coaches and players adjust their tactics and approach to the conditions they are likely to encounter.

His recommendation comes as Nigeria prepares to host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifying fixture.

Egbe proposed a wider preparation model combining opposition intelligence, pitch intelligence, climate intelligence, players’ physical profiles and tactical requirements.

According to him, such an approach would provide the technical crew with additional information for player selection and tactical planning, particularly when Nigeria face opponents on unfamiliar or significantly different playing surfaces across Africa.

The Monimichelle boss also stressed the importance of professional groundsmen in modern football, arguing that their expertise should form part of national team preparation.

He said groundsmen can provide valuable technical information about how a particular surface is expected to affect ball behaviour, player movement, traction and the overall tempo of a match.

Egbe also highlighted the Monimichelle Metro GridFlow Hybrid Synthetic System, which he described as a high-performance playing surface developed for African football conditions and produced by a FIFA-preferred producer.

He said the system was designed with durability and predictable playing characteristics in mind, particularly for intensive football environments.

Egbe concluded that the pitch should be treated as an important component of match preparation rather than simply the venue for a game.

He maintained that a better understanding of playing surfaces could help the Super Eagles adapt more effectively to the varying conditions they are likely to encounter during their AFCON qualifying campaign.
