As the 2025/26 football season draws to a close, Akwa United have expressed deep disappointment at narrowly missing out on promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League, while also extending congratulations to Sporting Lagos for clinching the sole promotion ticket from Conference B of the Nigeria National League.
The Uyo-based club had entered the campaign determined to secure an immediate return to the top flight following their relegation last season. Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, had earlier voiced his disappointment at the drop and charged the club’s management, led by Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey, to rebuild and deliver promotion.
Despite a spirited campaign, Akwa United fell just short, finishing one point behind Sporting Lagos. Club Chairman Joseph Eno described the outcome as painful but accepted it in the spirit of fair competition.
Reflecting on the season, he noted that the team ended on a positive note with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Solution FC in Awka. However, he admitted that their overall efforts—an unbeaten home record, three away wins and a draw on the road—proved insufficient in the tightly contested race.
“We congratulate Sporting Lagos for their achievement,” he said. “They provided formidable competition throughout, and the promotion battle went down to the final day.”
Joseph Eno also expressed gratitude to the state government, sponsors and supporters, acknowledging their unwavering backing throughout the campaign. He reserved special appreciation for airline partner Ibom Air and the club’s loyal fan base, whose support both at home and away remained a constant source of motivation.
Looking ahead, the chairman assured stakeholders that lessons would be learned and that the club would regroup with renewed determination. While the league season has ended, Akwa United remain active in the domestic cup, with their President Federation Cup campaign offering another opportunity for silverware.
“We are disappointed but proud of our effort,” he added. “We will come back stronger, better prepared, and ready to secure promotion next season.”
