A debate over an unusual proposal to create a “Ministry of Marital Relations” descended into violence in Armenia’s National Assembly, with lawmakers exchanging punches and throwing objects.
The dispute involved members of the ruling Civil Contract party and opposition Strong Armenia party, whose platform reportedly includes establishing the ministry to address declining birth rates and improve family relationships.
The proposal drew criticism from a ruling party lawmaker, who challenged the opposition over how the plan characterised citizens and demanded an apology. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, forcing the parliamentary session to be suspended as security officials intervened.
Strong Armenia had defended the idea as a response to demographic concerns, arguing that improving relationships and personal fulfilment could encourage population growth.
An opposition figure previously asked whether the proposal could mean that “there will be no unsatisfied women” in a strong Armenia.
Following the clash, the opposition leader appeared to endorse the confrontation, saying: “People who had been getting on our nerves for months got it right in the mouth – and got it good.”
The proposal and the parliamentary brawl have drawn attention to the increasingly heated political debate over Armenia’s demographic challenges.
