Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta voiced full confidence Friday in Enzo Maresca’s ability to excel at Manchester City, as the new City boss prepares for his first competitive fixture since succeeding Pep Guardiola.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield meeting between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners City, Arteta praised his former mentor Guardiola but insisted the title race remains fierce under Maresca, the ex-Chelsea manager.
“I know him well and he will provide something different,” Arteta said. “He has the personality, character, and knowledge to do an unbelievable job. He’s been selected for the right reasons.”
Arteta, who served as Guardiola’s assistant at City, called the departed Spaniard “the best coach in the history of football” and said his impact on the Premier League “has escalated the game to a different level.”
