At Book Launch, Experts Link Poor Governance To Nigeria’s Economic Crisis

Stakeholders at the launch of three books by Professor Atsiangbe Henry have attributed Nigeria’s economic challenges to weak governance structures and failure to deploy competent professionals into leadership positions.

The books focusing on wisdom to manage risks, corporate governance and compliance for organisation, and project accounting were unveiled at an event that drew participants from the academia, industry and the public sector.

At the ceremony held in Abuja yesterday, the book reviewer and industrial relations consultant, Pastor John Odion, described the publications as timely interventions across key sectors, including finance, oil and gas, and entrepreneurship.

He argued that Nigeria’s current economic realities, including rising cost of living and energy challenges, reflected a deeper governance gap driven by poor leadership choices.

According to him, “The nation’s challenges are not accidental. They are a result of putting the wrong people in positions of authority. We need individuals with the right knowledge and capacity to manage the economy effectively.”

Odion also emphasised the role of citizens in shaping governance outcomes, urging greater public participation in ensuring that capable individuals are entrusted with leadership responsibilities.

The chairman of the occasion, Chief Ime Udoko, said the books provided critical insights into corporate governance and resource management, particularly in the context of global economic trends.

He noted that the author explored key philosophical perspectives and governance models, while stressing the importance of managing resources for collective benefit rather than for a select few.

Udoko added that the work on project management highlighted why projects fail and underscored the need to measure success based on long-term value rather than mere completion.

“Delivering a project is not enough; what matters is the value it creates after execution,” he said.

In his remarks, the author, Professor Henry, said the books were borne out of years of research, experience and dedication to knowledge development.

He explained that the works were designed to guide leaders and organisations in adopting effective strategies, particularly in an increasingly digital and complex business environment.

“These books emphasise planning, innovation, governance and leadership capability. They are meant to equip individuals and institutions with the tools needed to succeed,” he said.

In a goodwill message, the chancellor of European American University, Jerry Kesly, congratulated the author, noting that his achievement reflected the institution’s values and academic excellence.

He said the publication of the books marked both a personal milestone for the author and a moment of pride for the institution.
