Kenyan President William Ruto has declared that the African Union (AU) was no longer capable of delivering the leadership and purpose Africa needed, calling for sweeping reforms of the continental body.
Ruto made the remarks while addressing a gathering in a video shared by DW Africa on its verified Facebook page on Sunday, where he criticised the current structure and effectiveness of the AU.
“I can tell you without an iota of doubt that African Union as is today is not fit for purpose,” the Kenyan leader said.
He went further to question the organisation’s capacity to guide the continent into the future, stressing that its leadership framework fell short of expectations.
“It is not fit to provide the leadership that this continent needs for the future,” Ruto added.
The president emphasised that the shortcomings of the AU make reform inevitable, insisting that the institution must be repositioned to meet Africa’s evolving political and economic realities.
“And therefore there is need for the reform of the African Union,” he stated.
