Australia World Cup midfielder Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine following two high-speed traffic stops in Sydney on the same nightāthe second just two hours after the first.
The 22-year-old was first pulled over on the Anzac Bridge for doing 86ā94km/h in a 60km/h zone. He passed a breath test but was stopped again at 1:00am for hitting 109km/h in the same zone, where he allegedly returned a positive oral fluid test for cocaine.
Police issued a speeding fine and suspended his international driverās licence for six months in New South Wales. A secondary sample has been sent for lab analysis, with inquiries continuing.
Volpato, who played three matches for the Socceroos at the World Cup (exit in round of 32 to Egypt on penalties), switched allegiance from Italy to Australia just before the tournament. He made 24 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo last season.
Football Australia said it is “in contact with the player” and monitoring the matter, while the players’ union confirmed it will “ensure he is supported.”
