WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT?

Awakening Possibilities in Disabilities is a children’s book designed to help young readers see abilities where society sometimes sees limitations. Through ten interactive stories, the book introduces children to different forms of disability in a way that is relatable, hopeful, participatory and empowering.

Each story follows a child navigating school, friendships, dreams, and everyday life, showing that disability does not define a person’s potential. The aim is to help children with disabilities see themselves in positive and confident ways, while also helping children without disabilities understand, appreciate, and respect differences.

Beyond storytelling, the book includes interactive activities, “Know Your Country” sections, and quiz questions that encourage children to explore disability awareness, Nigerian history, and future career possibilities. A dedicated Parent and Teacher Guide is also included, providing practical ways for adults to support conversations about inclusion, confidence, and empathy both at home and in the classroom.

Importantly, the book has gone through a formal educational assessment process by the Nigerian government institution responsible for evaluating learning resources for schools and has been certified as suitable for educational use. It is also available in both print and Braille formats, with the Braille adaptation supported by the national body responsible for advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.

In many ways, Awakening Possibilities in Disabilities represents the first resource of its kind in Nigeria that brings together inclusive storytelling, interactive learning, and guidance for parents and teachers creating a shared learning experience that supports both awareness and confidence among children. Incorporated in the book is a tool that can help access the knowledge, attitude and practice of these young minds as they read the book.

WHY I WROTE THE BOOK

The idea for Awakening Possibilities in Disabilities grew out of both personal experiences and meaningful encounters with children with disabilities.

Over time, I have had the opportunity to interact with children who are incredibly talented, curious, and full of potential, yet sometimes struggle with how society sees them. I also carried out research which reflected the gap in inclusive learning resources and through my work, I have seen how a simple moment of encouragement, representation, or understanding can completely change how a child begins to see themselves.

Those experiences stayed with me, spurring this belief, “When children see themselves reflected positively in stories, they begin to believe in possibilities they may never have imagined.”

I also realised that while there are many conversations about disability inclusion, there are still very few learning resources that help children understand these issues in ways that are engaging, relatable, and empowering. I wanted to create something that would allow children with disabilities to open a book and recognise themselves as capable, creative, and full of possibilities.

At the same time, I wanted children without disabilities to read these stories and develop empathy, awareness, and respect for differences from an early age. That is why the book also includes a Parent and Teacher Guide to help adults continue these important conversations beyond the pages of the book.

Stories have a unique power. They help us imagine, empathise, and see the world through someone else’s eyes. My hope is that through these stories, interactive activities, children will begin to see disability not as a limitation on dreams, career or participation in their country, but as part of the diversity that makes our communities richer and more inclusive.

Overall, the book is about planting a seed of confidence in children and reminding them that their abilities, talents, and aspirations deserve to be seen, supported, and celebrated.
