Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has called for urgent federal intervention and enhanced security support following a deadly banditry attack on Kafin Duguri community, where several residents were killed and others injured.
The governor made the appeal during a sympathy visit to the community, describing the attack as a grave security challenge that has overwhelmed local security formations.
He said security agencies on the ground require more sophisticated weapons and logistical support to effectively confront the bandits occupying parts of the area.
Governor Mohammed disclosed that while he was on an official trip to Abuja, he briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the situation. According to him, the President, as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, expressed deep condolences to the affected families and assured the community of federal support to restore peace.
While commending the bravery of Kafin Duguri residents, the governor said the people showed uncommon courage in the face of the attack, forcing the assailants to retreat.
He noted that although lives were lost and some residents sustained injuries, the resistance put up by the community demonstrated unity, resilience, and a strong attachment to their ancestral land.
Mohammed explained that banditry has been largely curtailed in other parts of the state, including Ningi, Jama’are, and Bogoro local government areas, but described the persistence of attacks in his home area of Duguri as particularly painful.
He assured residents that the government remains determined to completely eliminate criminal elements across the state.
Highlighting the economic importance of the area, the governor said Kafin Duguri is richly endowed with fertile land, agricultural produce, and natural resources, stressing that residents rely heavily on farming for their livelihood. He added that ongoing infrastructure projects, including road construction linking the community to neighboring areas, would continue despite security challenges.
As part of immediate measures, Governor Mohammed announced plans to recruit and train more vigilante members from the community in collaboration with the police.
He also assured that the Bauchi State Government has taken full responsibility for the medical treatment of the injured, while prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the attack.
