Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that he owes no apologies to anyone for supporting the re-election of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State in the November 11, 2023, off-cycle governorship poll.

Jonathan said that his public endorsement of the governor aligned with the aspirations of the majority of the people of the state. He said this during a visit from a high-powered delegation led by Governor Diri, who visited his residence in Yenagoa.

Accompanied by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, the former president commended the governor for his developmental efforts, particularly in ensuring peace and stability within the state.

He stressed the importance of security in attracting investors and noted the governor’s role in significantly reducing the activities of cult groups, especially in Yenagoa.

Expressing his support, Jonathan urged Governor Diri to continue working diligently to fulfil the high expectations of the people, stressing the principle: “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

In response, Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the former president for his endorsement, highlighting its significant impact on the Peoples Democratic Party’s success in the polls. He credited Jonathan’s support as instrumental in ensuring stability within the state, thereby creating an environment conducive for private investors.
