Officials of Birmingham City University (BCU) have said that the school is committed to providing a high-quality educational experience for Nigerians who seek to study in the United Kingdom (UK), focusing on practical, real-world applications and strong industry connections.

At a media briefing in Lagos, BCU showcased the opportunities available to Nigerian students seeking international education, especially in the UK, highlighting the benefits of choosing BCU over other institutions.

The international regional manager of BCU, Charles Magee, stated that BCU had transformed its teaching approach by putting employability at the forefront of its agenda and collaborating with industry experts to develop a curriculum that equips them with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in today’s digital landscape.

The College Academic Lead, College and Transnational Education, College of Life Science, Dr Olatunde Aremu, who has been at BCU for close to nine years, said his journey in the UK as a Nigerian academic has been very fruitful and, at the same time, a very good journey, simply because of his Nigerian heritage, which has helped him.

He said, “If I have to be honest, being in Birmingham has helped me in several ways because of the nature of the city. Birmingham is a multicultural city, making it easier to network with my Nigerian people, from students to professionals working in different areas.

“I’ve spent almost 10 years at BCU, where we have a growing community of Nigerian and African academics, including associate professors and the Vice Chancellor, Professor David Mba. We’re proud to have role models in UK academia.”

“That has given me, as an individual, the opportunity to network with staff members and students. As a student, you get to know, especially in my programme, that public health is one of the most popular courses in the UK, and we have quite a lot of Nigerian students, close to 400.

“So, imagine when you see people who look like you, people you can share your experiences with, and when you have an environment that allows you to thrive, there’s nothing you can’t do. So, it’s a perfect opportunity for a Nigerian student coming to BCU to read,” he said.

A senior lecturer and course director at HNC Construction, Solomon Adjei, advised students concerned about their lack of UK work experience. He shared an example of a student who completed a three-week placement with a prominent UK construction company, impressing them and landing a job and scholarship. The student eventually became a project manager without applying for a post-graduation position.

Adjei emphasised that many students have achieved similar success, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, companies are willing to recognise and recruit talented individuals, even without prior UK experience. “Many Nigerian students have benefited from our programmes, and I encourage others to follow in their footsteps.”

The head of the College of Business, BCU, Dr Tom Domboka, emphasised the importance of preparing students for the modern workforce. “We recognised the need to move away from traditional teaching methods and adapt to the demands of the 21st century,” he explained. “By working closely with industry professionals, we’ve designed our curriculum to address the specific needs of businesses, ensuring our graduates are highly employable and ready to make a meaningful impact.

“BCU’s innovative approach includes the integration of artificial intelligence and big data analytics into its programmes, empowering students to harness the power of technology and drive business growth. This forward-thinking strategy sets BCU apart, making it a pioneer in higher education.”

On her part, international recruitment officer, Titobi Oshinyimika, stated that Birmingham City University (BCU) is attracting a diverse group of students from across the globe thanks to its unique blend of cosmopolitan flair, affordability, and career opportunities.

According to Oshinyimika, “BCU’s location in Birmingham offers a vibrant and cosmopolitan lifestyle at an economical cost, drawing students from other UK cities and multinational companies. Our university leverages these connections to provide students with practical learning experiences, industry collaborations, and real-world exposure through placements, business incubators, and strong faculty support. This winning combination has made BCU attractive for international students seeking a well-rounded education and a competitive edge in their chosen fields.”
