Benue State commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr Margaret Adamu, has said plans were in top gear to end the five-week-old strike of Rev. Fr. Moses Oshio Adasu University (MOAUN), formerly Benue State University (BSU), for the resumption of academic activities.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benue State University branch, had on 1st June, 2026, declared an indefinite strike over the non-payment of promotion arrears, among other issues.

However, the education commissioner, who stated this during a meeting with the university’s Students Union Government in Makurdi, assured them that all hands were on deck in ensuring that the strike was called off, adding that Governor Hyacinth Alias had placed a premium on the people’s welfare and would not disappoint the confidence reposed in him by the people e.

The commissioner, however, advised the Students to support Alia’s administration by remaining peaceful and law-abiding, adding that it will spur the governor to do more in continuing with his good plans for the State.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s Head of Information, Dooshima Abuul, the commissioner advised students against protests, saying they can easily distract the present administration in its bid to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

On his part, the Students Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Vitalis Akirga, dissociated the SUG from the proposed protest, stating that those planning it were not genuine students but hired individuals seeking to bring the Union’s image into disrepute.

Comrade Akirga further stated that they will, as a matter of urgency, issue a statement to the Department of State Service (DSS) and other security agencies dissociating themselves from the proposed protest.
