The body of a student of the Benue State University, (BSU) Makurdi identified as Abel Agaba who was reported to have drowned in the River Benue was recovered by a fisherman on Friday.
A source in the area told our correspondent that the deceased, a 200-level student of the Chemistry Department, had gone missing after he went to swim in the river at night.
Agaba, who lived with his family members at Awe Street in the Wurukum area of Makurdi town, went to the river to swim after watching a football match at a viewing center in the area at about 11:45 pm but did not return.
He said, “We gathered that Agaba after watching the European Champions League football matches that finished at about 11:45 pm said he was feeling hot and wanted to go down the river which is close by to cool his body.
“Although those with him advised against going to the river at that time, he insisted and went alone since it was the usual practice around the area for people to go swimming at night whenever there is too much heat.
“As he insisted and went alone nobody bothered to check on him till Friday morning when a fisherman in the neighbourhood went to the River to check his fishing nets and discovered Agaba’s body attached to his fishing net.
“The said man raised the alarm and people in the area rushed there and recovered the body which was identified by his family members who took his remains to the mortuary,” he said.
Police spokesperson Catherine Anene said she was yet to receive information on the incident.
