Jordy Bos netted a crucial late winner to spare Australia’s blushes, securing a 1-0 friendly victory over Cameroon in one of the Socceroos’ final World Cup warm-up matches.
Bos’s 85th-minute goal papered over what was a largely uninspiring performance from Tony Popovic’s side. In front of 23,798 fans at Stadium Australia on Friday, the Socceroos struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
“The first half there were a lot of new boys and we looked a little bit anxious,” Popovic admitted. “I thought we created some good openings but didn’t finish the chances.”
The introduction of Nestory Irankunda as a striker in the second half provided a much-needed spark, with Popovic noting, “I think in the second half we were more compact and aggressive.”
Substitute Ajdin Hrustic missed a penalty shortly after coming on, but Bos capitalised on a defensive mix-up from Cameroon to snatch the winner. Debutants Deni Juric and Lucas Herrington featured, with the latter impressing at centre-back.
Despite a disciplined display, Australia lacked creativity for much of the game, failing to register a shot on target in the first half. However, Bos’s intervention ensured they avoided a penalty shootout in the FIFA friendly series.
