Brooklyn Store Says Kelly Clarkson Spent Just Five Minutes Shopping

A Brooklyn store embroiled in a public dispute with Kelly Clarkson has again responded to the singer, saying she spent just five minutes shopping at the premises as it attempts to resolve the disagreement.

Art of Play made the statement on Sunday as the dispute continued over Clarkson’s claim that staff treated her condescendingly when she visited the shop on October 10.

The singer had accused an employee of making assumptions about what she could afford after she asked about buying a mechanical singing bird called Molly. She later called the store a liar after it said the bird was permanently attached to the wall and not for sale.

In its latest response, the store said the bird’s creator, artist Bliss Kolb, had a nearly identical automaton in Seattle that he was willing to sell for $15,000. It added that staff offered Clarkson another singing bird, priced at about $2,000, but she left before seeing it.

The store said it had contacted Clarkson directly to “try and clear the air” and hoped the disagreement could eventually become a misunderstanding they could laugh about.

Clarkson disputed the store’s account, insisting that she had pointed to a price tag beside the bird and was told it was available for $15,000, with a cheaper alternative offered.

The singer first compared her experience to Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman, the 1990 film about a woman mistreated in a luxury shop.
