Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Cross River State, Comrade Gregory Olayi has canvassed for upscaling of teachers’ remuneration to boost their morale, so that they can meet up with current economic realities.
The chairman also called for speedy payment of their promotion arrears by the state government so that they can square up with their counterparts in other fields.
Olayi made the call yesterday in an address he delivered during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration which took place at the UJ Esuene Township Stadium in Calabar.
The NUT lamented the delay in the payment of the low wage paid particularly to the primary school teachers saying that the situation is bad for the teachers given the economic realities of the time.
“It has been observed that the state workers receive their salaries early enough while the primary school teachers collect theirs two or more weeks later,” he said.
The NUT enumerated other areas of need to include granting of tax exemption to all teachers, lack of science laboratory and equipment, infrastructure decay in schools which he said suffer zero maintenance culture, regular infiltration of hoodlums to schools due to absence of perimeter fence and the need to employ security guards and non-teaching staff.
