Chelsea To Offload 16 Players As Alonso Battles Squad Overload

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso faces a major squad-management challenge ahead of the new Premier League season, with the club reportedly needing to move on a significant number of players before the summer transfer window closes.

The Blues currently have a heavily congested first-team group, with reports putting the number of senior players at around 41. Alonso is expected to work with a much smaller squad of about 25 players for the 2026/27 campaign, leaving the club with a sizeable task to complete in the remaining days of the transfer window.

Chelsea’s squad has continued to expand through a combination of new signings, returning loan players and academy prospects stepping into the senior set-up. The club’s own pre-season squad list already showed a large group travelling with the first team, while Premier League registration rules ultimately limit clubs to a maximum 25-player senior squad, subject to home-grown requirements.

The situation has increased pressure on the club’s recruitment department to accelerate departures, with players likely to leave either on permanent transfers or loans.

Reports suggest Chelsea could sanction the departures of up to 16 players as Alonso seeks to establish a balanced squad capable of challenging across the domestic campaign. The club is particularly overloaded in defence, with Alonso indicating that he would prefer to have only four or five centre-backs in his final squad.

The club also has several attacking options competing for limited places, further complicating Alonso’s selection decisions.

The traditional solution for clubs with bloated squads has been to place unwanted players in a separate training group, often referred to as a ‘bomb squad’, while encouraging them to find new clubs.

However, the current situation means Chelsea cannot simply rely on isolating surplus players while waiting for the transfer market to resolve the problem. The club must find practical solutions through permanent sales, loans or other squad-registration arrangements.

Chelsea’s challenge is therefore not simply about reducing numbers but ensuring that the players remaining at Stamford Bridge fit Alonso’s tactical plans and are able to compete for places throughout the season.

The task is made more pressing by the limited time remaining before the transfer window closes, with Chelsea needing to balance squad reduction with the possibility of further incoming business.

Alonso has already begun assessing his players during pre-season and has stressed the importance of building a competitive squad with the right mentality and standards. His immediate priority will now be turning Chelsea’s oversized group into a manageable first-team unit before the new campaign gathers pace.
