Chelsea legend Joe Cole has thrown out a bold solution to the club’s ongoing struggles—sign Robert Lewandowski and John Stones for nothing this summer.
The former England midfielder believes the veteran duo would bring exactly what the Blues’ young squad desperately lacks: maturity, leadership, and a winning mindset.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Cole argued that free-agent moves for experienced stars would be far smarter than splashing cash on more raw talent.
He emphasised that players like Lewandowski and Stones don’t need to start every match, but their presence in the dressing room would be priceless.
“You bring in your John Stones and Robert Lewandowski on free transfers—players who understand winning and culture,” Cole said. “They can still contribute on the pitch, but more importantly, they pass down wisdom. Great teams are coached from within their own dressing room, not just by managers.”
The former Chelsea man didn’t hide his frustration, adding: “It baffles me how people don’t see that. If the owners have finally read the room, good. If not, Chelsea will keep hitting the same ceiling—better next year, but never elite.”
Cole’s advice comes as new manager Xabi Alonso prepares to take over a fractured squad. Meanwhile, Chelsea face added pressure to sell key players after missing out on European revenue for next season.
