A former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has yet to take a position on reported overtures by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a meeting with the party’s chieftains in Abuja.

The NDC delegation, which included its national vice chairman (North West), Mohammed Bakin, was received by Kwankwaso at his residence on Monday, fuelling speculations about possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources had suggested that the visit was part of efforts to woo the former presidential candidate into joining the party.

But reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Mohammed, said discussions were still ongoing and no commitment had been made.

“It is true that they have met him. The leadership here in Kano first engaged him, and the national leaders also met him in Abuja. But this remains part of ongoing consultations,” he said.

He noted that the NDC’s move was one of several approaches by opposition groups seeking alignment with Kwankwaso, who remains a key political figure in the North.

“Considering the current political situation, they have been making efforts to reach out and persuade him to give assurances to their party, but he has not made any official statement,” Mohammed added.

According to him, the engagements form part of broader consultations involving multiple political interests.

“What is happening is part of wider consultations. We cannot make any pronouncement at this stage. Not only the NDC, even PRP and other opposition parties have been in touch, especially given the ongoing legal and political developments,” he stated.

The development comes amid increasing political manoeuvring within opposition circles as stakeholders begin early calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
