The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has appealed to organisers of the #endbadgovernance protest to call it off and give the government a chance to redeem itself.

The call was made in a press statement jointly signed by the Sultan of Sokoto, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and co-chairman of NIREC, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar; president, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and co-chairman of NIREC, Archbishop Dr Daniel Okoh and executive secretary of NIREC, Rev. Fr. Prof. Cornelius Afebu Omonokhus.

The council said it was with heavy hearts that they observed the happenings in the country presently, and that it was without doubt that there is hunger and hardship, but that civil unrest is not the solution as it would only further aggravate the already frail state of the nation.

The council expressed sadness that just on the first day of the protest lives and enormous property were destroyed, saying if the protest continued for a prolonged period, only God knows the extent of damage that would be incurred.

“The council calls on the security agencies to be more professional in the discharge of their duties. NIREC urges the government to expedite action towards meeting the yearnings and needs of the citizens. We need a peaceful and tranquil nation we can be proud to call our own. May God bless us all,” they stated.
