Curacao’s Groundbreaking Doctor Breaking Barriers At FIFA 2026 World Cup

As Curacao continue their remarkable World Cup journey, one member of the delegation is making history away from the pitch.

Dr Suzanne Huurman is the only female head of medical staff among the 48 nations competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming just the third woman to hold such a role in the tournament’s 96-year history.

In a competition where 47 of the 48 teams have male medical chiefs, Dr Huurman’s presence represents a significant milestone for women’s representation in elite men’s football.

The Brazil-born sports physician has built an impressive career, working with clubs including Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven and Go Ahead Eagles, while also serving with the Netherlands Under-16 boys’ team and the Dutch women’s handball side.

Despite her trailblazing status, Huurman says she initially paid little attention to the significance of being the only woman in such a position.

“I didn’t realise in the beginning because it’s so normal to be the only, or one of the few, women in the room,” she told BBC Sports.

“But I hope to see more women soon because there are a lot more women out there who are capable.”

Curacao, a Caribbean nation of around 158,000 people, became the smallest country by population ever to qualify for the World Cup. They reached the tournament unbeaten, recording seven wins and three draws during qualification.

Huurman admits working in a male-dominated environment can present obstacles, particularly at the start of a career.

“If you show them you’re capable and you’re good at what you do, then it’s easy that they accept you because it’s about quality and performing,” she explained.

“But you have to prove yourself. It’s hard to get in because in the beginning you always have a lot of people that say no. How can women work in a male environment?”

Her experience with Curacao illustrates the challenge. Among a travelling delegation of 49 players and staff, she remains the only woman.

Yet her presence at football’s biggest tournament is a powerful reminder of the progress being made and the work still required to increase female representation across the sport.

As Curacao continue to defy expectations on the field, Huurman is quietly making history off it, helping pave the way for the next generation of women in football medicine.
