Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has condemned the brutal assault on one of its members, Dr Adja Harrison, at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, describing the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable.”

In a statement signed by its president, Dr Mohammad Usman Suleiman, secretary-general, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, and publicity and social secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, yesterday, NARD said the incident reportedly occurred during a protest by members of the host community who had blocked the hospital gate over grievances linked to staff employment.

According to the association, tensions escalated when Harrison attempted to de-escalate the situation and assist movement within the facility. In the process, he was allegedly attacked and struck forcefully by an assailant, sustaining an injury to his eardrum. He was later rescued by bystanders who moved him to safety for urgent care.

NARD said the attack represents a serious violation of the rights and safety of healthcare workers, stressing that doctors who serve in demanding and often high-risk environments must be protected at all times.

The association called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, demanding the identification, arrest, and prosecution of all those involved.

It also threw its weight behind the resolutions of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), DELSUTH Oghara chapter, and expressed support for ongoing industrial action until key demands are addressed. These include a formal apology from the host community, improved security within the hospital, medical and psychological support for the injured doctor, and assurance that such incidents will not recur.

NARD further urged the Delta State Government, security agencies, and community leaders to act swiftly to restore order and safeguard healthcare personnel, warning that failure to do so could trigger wider industrial unrest.

While acknowledging efforts by the state government to improve healthcare delivery, the association warned that repeated incidents of violence against medical workers are undermining the health system and eroding public trust.

NARD extended solidarity to Dr. Harrison and the ARD DELSUTH Oghara chapter, wishing the injured doctor a speedy recovery.
