Dolly Parton’s legacy stretches far beyond the music that made her a global star. Her career encompassed film, business, tourism and philanthropy, with her efforts to improve children’s literacy becoming one of the most enduring parts of her public life.

She helped establish Dollywood, which grew into a major tourist attraction in Tennessee, and launched the Imagination Library in 1995. The programme, inspired in part by her father’s inability to read and write, provides free books to children from birth to age five and has now gifted more than 300 million books worldwide.

Parton also donated $1 million to COVID-19 vaccine research, supporting work at Vanderbilt University that contributed to the development of Moderna’s vaccine.

Her career was not without difficult moments. Parton’s decision to leave Porter Wagoner’s television and musical partnership and pursue a solo career led to a bitter dispute, with Wagoner suing her before the matter was eventually settled.

In later years, Parton’s determination to remain largely above partisan politics sometimes drew criticism from people who wanted her to take clearer positions. Her songs, image and public persona were also occasionally drawn into political and cultural debates, although she generally resisted being claimed by either side.

Following her death, tributes have poured in from around the world. US President Donald Trump ordered American flags to be lowered for a week, calling her death “a true loss for millions of people” and saying there had “never been anyone like her, and never will.”

Her goddaughter Miley Cyrus also mourned Parton, describing her death as devastating and remembering her as someone with “a pure heart.”

Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, who announced her death, said she had spent her life opening doors and changing history through the opportunities she created for others.
