One train driver lost their life, and 89 others were left injured after a pair of passenger trains crashed into each other near Bedford on Friday evening, marking one of the most severe railway disasters Britain has witnessed in years.

The incident took place just after 5 PM on the stretch of track linking Bedford and Luton. A service travelling from Nottingham to London St Pancras had apparently come to a halt because of a technical safety issue, and was then rear-ended by another train heading from Corby to St Pancras.

A major incident was declared, triggering a large-scale response involving officers, fire crews, ambulance staff and several air ambulances racing to the site.

Officials confirmed a driver had been killed, while a total of 89 people required treatment for injuries, 11 of whom were left in a critical condition.
