D’Tigress To Take On WNBA Elite In Landmark US Exhibition Tour

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has announced an ambitious international exhibition tour for the senior women’s national team, D’Tigress. The tour, set to take place in the United States, forms a central pillar of the team’s strategic preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

In a significant move for African basketball, Nigeria will collaborate with several Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) franchises. The tour is designed to test the reigning African champions against world-class opposition in three major American cities.

The schedule kicks off on 25 April 2026, when D’Tigress face the Los Angeles Sparks in San Diego. This will be followed by a clash with the Minnesota Lynx in Kansas City on 27 April, before the tour concludes in Indianapolis on 2 May against the Indiana Fever. These fixtures will see Nigeria’s elite talent go head-to-head with some of the most recognisable names in the global game.

Outgoing NBBF President, Musa Kida, emphasised that the tour is a declaration of Nigeria’s global ambitions. “This tour represents more than preparation — it represents intent,” Kida stated. “D’Tigress has established itself as a dominant force in Africa, but our ambitions are global. Every step we take now is with the World Cup in mind. Our objective is clear: to compete at the highest level and bring that title to Nigeria.”

Head Coach Rena Wakama echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tactical necessity of facing WNBA-calibre competition. “We are not just preparing to show up — we are preparing to make a statement,” Wakama said. “Competing against top WNBA talent challenges us physically, mentally, and tactically. It allows us to refine our identity.”

The tour also carries a heavy commercial and branding weight. Ugo Udezue, Chairman of the NBBF’s Sponsorship and Marketing Committee, noted the importance of engaging the Nigerian diaspora and building the D’Tigress brand into a global sports powerhouse. Supported by premium partners such as XE Jet and the financial technology firm Flutterwave, the federation aims to align Nigerian basketball with international standards of operational excellence.

For D’Tigress, the 2026 World Cup cycle is no longer about mere participation; the focus has shifted entirely toward a historic podium finish.
