The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Akwa Ibom State Directorate, has placed residents on alert over the possible resurgence of Ebola in the country, urging them to adopt immediate preventive measures.
Although no case has been reported in Akwa Ibom State, the State Director of NOA, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, said residents must remain proactive to prevent an outbreak across the 31 local government areas.
Addressing journalists in Uyo, Mkpoutom urged residents to stay vigilant following reports of Ebola’s resurgence in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Residents are therefore urged to prioritise their health and safety by maintaining good personal hygiene, avoiding contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of suspected infected persons, and refraining from touching the bodies of individuals who may have died from the disease,” he said.
The NOA director stressed the importance of public awareness and responsible health practices in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
He urged residents to seek prompt medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with Ebola, including fever, severe weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, particularly after possible exposure to the virus.
Mkpoutom also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information or rumours about the disease, advising residents to rely on official announcements and guidance from health authorities.
According to him, accurate information and public cooperation are essential to preventing panic and protecting communities.
The state director called on community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to support public enlightenment campaigns by sharing accurate information on Ebola prevention.
He also urged officials responsible for securing waterways, airports, land borders and other entry points into the state to remain alert and ensure proper screening of people entering Akwa Ibom.
Mkpoutom appealed to residents to remain calm and vigilant, cooperate with health authorities, and take preventive measures seriously to protect themselves, their families and their communities.
