Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Beta Edu, has enjoined Nigerian Social Workers to continue to serve as a platform to amplify diverse voices, share actionable insights and inspire collective action.
Edu made this assertion in her keynote address at the opening the 40th Annual National Conference/ Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW) and its 50th anniversary, held in Osogbo, Osun State.
Governor Ademola Adeleke declared the event open, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children, and Social Welfare, Hon. Elizabeth Fadeyi Awolowo. It drew a large number of participants from within and across the globe.
Edu addressed the gathering and urged the association to serve as a platform to amplify diverse voices, share actionable insights, and inspire collective action.
She said that strengthening intergenerational solidarity is essential for promoting enduring wellbeing.
The lead paper presenter, Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Solomon Adebola, whose paper focused on “Building Resilience among Social Workers in Nigeria”, was represented by the deputy registrar/ director of Human Resources of the institution, Mrs Oladayo Aliu.
The conference commended the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for introducing policies and programmes to ameliorate the country’s hardships and enjoined it to put all necessary machinery in place to address the country’s level of insecurity.
It also emphasised that social workers play a crucial role in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s individuals, groups, and communities. It was noted that the primary purpose of social work is to promote problem-solving strategies that enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.
