The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and stakeholders in Bauchi and Gombe states have called for stronger action to end child marriage, improve girls’ access to education and protect their rights.

The call was made in Gombe at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement organised by UNICEF in collaboration with the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC), ahead of the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11.

The event, themed: “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” brought together traditional rulers, women’s groups, development partners, media representatives and girls to discuss practical measures to address harmful sociocultural practices and expand opportunities for girls.

Ladi Alabi, Child Protection Specialist at UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office, stressed the need for a holistic approach to girls’ development.

Alabi pointed out that the health risks associated with early marriage, including vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).

She called for greater investment in girls’ education and empowerment, saying these were essential to overcoming harmful cultural practices and enabling girls to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Participants also called for increased awareness, mentorship and support for girls, while urging improvements in the socioeconomic conditions of vulnerable families to address factors contributing to child marriage.

Some girls who shared their experiences during the event, urged stakeholders to challenge gender stereotypes and ensure that girls, particularly those who have lost hope of continuing their education, receive the support needed to pursue their ambitions.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the engagement, UNICEF Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Dr Nuzhat Rafiq, said ending child marriage required coordinated action across health, education, nutrition and social protection sectors.

According to Dr Rafiq, if child marriage will not end, girls will not get the right opportunity to grow to their best potentials.

Rafiq described education as the greatest investment in girls, advocating equal access for every child, including girls with disabilities.
