Super Falcons interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has insisted that Nigeria will maintain their tactical approach against Comoros as they seek to secure a place in the third round of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The 10-time African champions take a 2-0 advantage into Tuesday’s second-leg encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, following their victory in Friday’s first leg.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Eguavoen said his priority was to preserve the team’s structure while ensuring they remained ambitious in front of goal.
“Our game plan is still the same; nothing has changed. We are home now after our two-goal advantage in the away game,” he said.
“I am interested in goals, but I am more interested in the structure of the team. The bottom line is that we will try to win the next game.”
The coach disclosed that the technical crew had reviewed the first-leg performance and worked on areas requiring improvement, while also studying Comoros’ tactical approach ahead of the return fixture.
He warned against underestimating the opponents, despite Nigeria’s advantage, noting that several Comoros players are based in France.
Eguavoen also confirmed that the Super Falcons had no injury concerns ahead of the encounter, expressing satisfaction with the team’s preparations.
He highlighted the competition for places within the squad, revealing that 14 newly invited players were in camp and suggesting that some could be given opportunities in Tuesday’s match.
The coach cited debutant Joy Igbokwe’s performance in the first leg as evidence of the contribution new players could make to the team.
Although he admitted that he was uncertain about the approach Comoros would adopt in the return fixture, Eguavoen expressed confidence in Nigeria’s physical strength and aggression.
He said the Falcons would aim to deliver another positive performance and secure a victory for their supporters.
Nigeria won Friday’s first leg 2-0 through second-half goals from defender Michelle Alozie and forward Uchenna Kanu.
The return fixture will also take place at the Remo Stars Stadium because Comoros do not have a Confederation of African Football-approved venue for international matches.
Victory, a draw or even a one-goal defeat would send Nigeria through to the third round on aggregate, where they are scheduled to face Morocco in March 2027.
The Falcons are seeking a second consecutive Olympic appearance after returning to the Games at Paris 2024, ending a 16-year absence from the women’s football tournament.
