As the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) hurtles toward its final stretch, one midfielder is refusing to let his position on the pitch define his scoring ambitions.
Daddy Abdulrahman of El-Kanemi Warriors has set his sights firmly on the league’s most coveted individual prize, the Golden Boot.
With 33 league appearances under his belt this season, the industrious playmaker has already netted ten goals for Kabiru Dogo’s side. It’s a personal best that has caught many by surprise, but not Abdulrahman himself.
Currently, the top of the scorers’ chart belongs to Joseph Arumala of Ikorodu City, who sits on 12 goals. Yet the two-goal gap has done nothing to dampen the former Shooting Stars man’s belief.
In a chat with NPFL.com.ng, Abdulrahman opened up about his late-season mission. “I feel very excited to be among the top scorers because this is the first season I have scored this many goals in the league,” he said, a sense of pride evident in his voice.
But excitement has quickly given way to hunger. “Yes, my target is to score more goals. You know the gap between the top scorers and me is two goals,” he explained. “I will try my best to improve my goals. I believe I can score two, three or even five more goals before the end of the season. Anyone God allows me get, I will accept it.”
For a midfielder to be chasing a prize typically dominated by out-and-out strikers makes Abdulrahman’s pursuit all the more compelling.
His manager, Kabiru Dogo, has consistently deployed him in an advanced role, and the player has repaid that faith with crucial strikes. Teammates describe him as tireless in training, often staying behind to work on finishing drills.
As the season enters its decisive phase, every match for El-Kanemi becomes a potential stage for Abdulrahman’s golden dream.
Whether he catches Arumala or not, his determination has already added a thrilling subplot to this NPFL campaign one where a midfielder dares to think like a striker.
