Prince William gave the England team a pep talk immediately after Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Denmark in Frankfurt.
The Prince of Wales, who is also the president of the Football Association, visited the dressing room after the final whistle and told the players “it’s not the end of the world,” after the team was booed off by disgruntled England fans at Deutsche Bank Park.
Harry Kane scored the opening goal after 18 minutes but for the second game in succession, England dropped deep thereafter and struggled to maintain possession as Morten Hjulmand equalised in the 34th minute and Denmark finished the match far stronger.
Midfielder Adam Wharton said: “He was just trying to keep us all positive. He was saying it’s not the end of the world.
“We were thinking ‘we’re still top of the group, we didn’t lose, we got a draw, we’ve just got to reflect on the game, see how we can get better and look forward to the next game.’ That’s all you can do in tournament football.”
It follows Prince William’s visit to St George’s Park shortly before the squad left for Germany where he presented the squad with shirts and spent a brief period with manager Gareth Southgate.
Although England have been criticised for two underwhelming displays – with former England captain Gary Lineker describing their performance against Denmark as “s—.” They remain top of Group C and can seal first place with a win against Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday.
