In a significant turn of events for the British monarchy, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew) was arrested on February 19, 2026, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The arrest follows a massive release of more than 3 million documents from the U.S. Department of Justice—frequently referred to as the “Epstein Files”—which have cast a new, more clinical light on the relationship between the former Duke of York and the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Arrest and Current Status
The arrest was carried out by Thames Valley Police, the jurisdiction covering the Windsor area, following a “thorough assessment” of allegations that the former prince used his official government role for improper purposes.

The Charges: The primary focus is “misconduct in public office.” This stems from evidence suggesting that during his tenure as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment (2001–2011), Andrew shared sensitive or confidential trade reports with Epstein.

The Location: Unmarked police vehicles were reportedly seen at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate, where Andrew has been residing since being moved out of Royal Lodge.

The Royal Reaction: Buckingham Palace has maintained a firm distance, stating that the former prince no longer represents the King. However, King Charles III has reportedly indicated that the Palace will “support” the police investigation as needed.

Key Revelations from the 2026 Epstein Files
The sheer volume of the January 2026 document dump (some 3 million pages) shifted the focus from social associations to potential criminal breaches of the Official Secrets Act and public trust.

1. The Trade Envoy Reports

The most damaging files include emails from 2010. These appear to show Andrew forwarding official reports on business and investment climates in Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Singapore directly to Epstein. This raised immediate questions about whether Epstein—a private financier—was receiving insider information to benefit his own investments.

2. Continued Contact Post-Conviction

While the former prince famously claimed in his 2019 Newsnight interview that he visited Epstein in 2010 only to “break off” the friendship, the new files suggest a more enduring connection.

Buckingham Palace Invitations: Emails from September 2010 show Andrew inviting Epstein to the Palace for “private time” and dinner shortly after Epstein’s release from house arrest in Florida.

“We are in this together”: One unearthed email from 2011 allegedly features Andrew telling Epstein, “We are in this together and will have to rise above it,” suggesting a shared defensive strategy long after Epstein was a registered sex offender.

3. Business Collusion

The files also suggest that Epstein and an aide to Andrew discussed forming a “highly private investment office” in London to use the prince’s “aura and access” to attract Chinese investors.

Context of the “Fall from Grace”
This arrest marks the culmination of a multi-year decline in Andrew’s public and legal standing:

2022: Settled a civil sexual assault lawsuit with Virginia Giuffre for an estimated £12 million.

2025: Formally stripped of his royal styles, military affiliations, and the “Duke of York” title by King Charles III.

2026: Becomes the first member of the immediate royal family in modern history to be arrested on criminal charges related to his official duties.

Note: Under UK law, the case is now “active,” meaning legal restrictions (sub judice) apply to what can be published regarding the specifics of the evidence to ensure a fair trial.
