Ex-Senator Nwaogu Resigns From APC, Cites Alleged Injustice In Primaries

Former Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Nkechi Nwaogu, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged injustice and irregularities within the party’s internal processes.

Nwaogu, who also previously served in the House of Representatives for Osisioma Ngwa/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, confirmed her resignation on Thursday during a telephone interview.

“I can confirm that I have left the party,” she said.

The former lawmaker linked her decision to the outcome of the recent APC primary election in her zone, which produced Emeka Atuma as the party’s candidate.

Reacting to the process, she alleged that the primaries in her area lacked credibility and fairness.

“In my zone, there was no election. I know I have an advantage in my zone. When I saw the shenanigans of them trying to destroy the party we built, I knew they are losing touch,” she said.

She further accused some party stakeholders of undermining internal democracy and working against the interests of the APC.

Her resignation comes amid reports of speculation that she was considering a move to the National Democratic Coalition, while party leaders were said to have made efforts to persuade her to remain within the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the APC said it had not received any formal notification of her resignation.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, said the state leadership was yet to be officially informed.

“If she has left the party, I have no knowledge. We are yet to get any letter to that effect,” he said.

Nwaogu’s exit comes amid renewed debate over political defections and internal party cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
