The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, Amos Paul, for allegedly using a hot pressing iron to burn the private part of his 10-year-old daughter as punishment for bedwetting.
The suspect, a resident of Unaun, Upenme in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, was arrested after the incident was reported to the police on Thursday.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the girl sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, where she is receiving treatment.
According to the police, detectives from the ‘A’ Division, Owo, responded promptly to the report, moved to the scene and arrested the suspect.
Jimoh said the case has been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command for further investigation and other necessary action in line with established procedures.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, condemned the alleged act, describing it as cruel, inhumane and completely unacceptable.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons from abuse, violence and exploitation, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
“This alleged act is cruel, inhumane and completely unacceptable. The Ondo State Police Command remains committed to protecting children and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice,” CP Felix Ohagwu said.
The commissioner also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of child abuse, domestic violence and related offences to the nearest police station, assuring that the Command would ensure justice for victims.
Police said investigations are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody pending the outcome of the probe.
