The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced a nationwide baseline study aimed at strengthening data collection, policy planning, and investment decisions in Nigeria’s livestock sector.

The study, which covers 67 result indicators, is expected to provide the government with credible data for monitoring performance and driving reforms across the livestock value chain.

According to the ministry, the exercise is part of efforts to deepen transparency, accountability, and evidence-based governance in the sector.

Field work for the study was conducted between April 20 and 24, 2026, through a combination of data reviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews, the government said.

The ministry said the study adopted a value chain approach covering cattle production, dairy, poultry, sheep and goats, piggery, micro livestock, feed and fodder systems, veterinary services, logistics, and market infrastructure.

To ensure broad representation, field activities were carried out across six states selected to reflect Nigeria’s geographical spread and production diversity.

Stakeholders engaged during the exercise included livestock producers, pastoralists, ranch operators, processors, traders, marketers, input suppliers, service providers, and government regulatory agencies.

The ministry noted that the consultations provided insights into production challenges, market trends, and other factors affecting the performance of the sector.

It added that interviews with government officials, technical experts, and private sector operators also contributed to the study’s findings.

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development said the outcome of the baseline study would serve as a benchmark for measuring progress, shaping interventions, and improving coordination within the livestock industry.

The ministry added that the findings, expected to be released in the coming weeks, would support efforts to improve food security, economic diversification, and sustainable livelihoods nationwide.
