The federal government has launched a new Food Safety Operational Manual aimed at equipping food scientists and food scientific officers with advanced scientific and technical skills to improve food safety practices across the country.
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, said the initiative aligns with the National Policy on Food Safety and Quality and its Implementation Plan (2023). He emphasized that the training program would empower experts to strengthen food monitoring and regulation at all levels.
“This manual is designed for the intensive training of our food scientists and food scientific officers. It will empower them with the latest scientific and technical skills, ensuring they are fully equipped to oversee and enhance food safety practices across Nigeria,” the Minister stated.
He added that the Ministry has in recent years developed comprehensive national guidelines in partnership with state governments to address unique food safety challenges at sub-national levels. These efforts, he noted, are tailored to ensure that all communities benefit from effective food safety measures.
In a move to promote grassroots food safety awareness, the ministry said it is also leveraging the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to disseminate best practices across rural and urban areas. “We are proud to promote sustained food safety awareness through the NYSC, using the energy and fresh ideas of our youth to reach even the remotest parts of the country,” the minister added.
The launch marks another step in the government’s broader effort to strengthen public health and ensure the safety of food consumed by Nigerians.
