The federal government has renewed its push to accelerate housing delivery across the country, as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttagha Rabe Darma, inspected the Kano Renewed Hope City Housing Project and described it as a model for scaling affordable housing through public-private partnerships.

Darma said the project represents a practical demonstration of how strategic collaboration between government and private developers can address Nigeria’s widening housing deficit while stimulating economic activity at the sub national level.

The minister made the remarks during an inspection tour of the 1,500-unit housing estate in Kano State, where he assessed the pace of construction and engaged project developers and stakeholders on delivery timelines and quality standards.

He said the visit formed part of a nationwide monitoring exercise aimed at evaluating ongoing federal government housing projects under various intervention schemes, with a focus on ensuring timely completion and adherence to approved specifications.

According to him, the ministry is intensifying oversight of housing developments across the country to reduce delays that have historically slowed the delivery of large-scale public housing projects.

“The objective is simple: to ensure these projects are delivered on schedule and in line with approved standards. We want Nigerians to begin enjoying the benefits of these housing initiatives as quickly as possible,” Darma said.

He noted that the Renewed Hope Housing Programme is anchored on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements designed to mobilise private capital, improve efficiency, and expand access to decent and affordable housing nationwide.

Darma explained that beyond addressing shelter needs, housing projects of this scale are already generating significant economic spillovers, including job creation and increased demand for local goods and services.

He said artisans, contractors, transport operators, and suppliers were actively benefiting from ongoing construction activities at the Kano site, adding that such projects contribute to local economic stimulation in host communities.

“This project is not only about providing houses. It is creating employment opportunities, boosting local commerce and contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the area,” he said.

The minister disclosed that the Kano Renewed Hope City project comprises 1,500 housing units of varying designs and is expected to accommodate more than 6,000 residents upon completion.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded on the site, commending the developers and implementation partners for their commitment, while urging them to maintain momentum to meet delivery timelines.

Darma reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to expanding housing access through innovative financing models and stronger collaboration with the private sector, particularly in urban infrastructure development.

He said the administration’s housing strategy under the Renewed Hope Agenda is aimed at tackling Nigeria’s housing shortage, improving living standards, and driving broader economic growth through construction-led development.

The Kano project is one of several flagship housing schemes being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development as part of ongoing efforts to close Nigeria’s estimated housing deficit and expand homeownership opportunities nationwide.
