The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria), Bauchi branch, has raised concerns over the challenges confronting girls in Bauchi State and across the country, including forced marriage, gender-based violence (GBV), limited access to secondary education and inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities.
The organisation stressed that every girl deserves an environment where her rights are protected, her dignity respected and her aspirations supported through effective legal protection and community action.
FIDA made this known in a statement issued to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, with the theme, “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being.”
The statement, signed by the chairperson of FIDA Nigeria, Bauchi branch, Barr. Hauwa Ahmed Abubakar, said the occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, potential and voices of girls while renewing efforts to address the barriers hindering their development.
“Today serves not only as a celebration of our collective progress but also as an urgent call to action to dismantle the systemic barriers that continually hinder young girls from realising their fullest potential,” the statement said.
FIDA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the comprehensive implementation and strict enforcement of the Child Protection Law in Bauchi State.
According to the organisation, legal provisions for protecting children must translate into practical safeguards in schools, homes and public spaces.
It called on government agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders to ensure survivors of abuse, exploitation and forced marriage have prompt access to justice and adequate legal support.
The organisation also urged relevant authorities to invest in safe and accessible learning environments equipped with adequate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to encourage girls to remain in school and complete their education.
FIDA further advocated the establishment of platforms where girls could receive mentorship, express their views and participate in decisions affecting their lives and future.
It emphasised that protecting the girl child goes beyond fulfilling a social responsibility, describing it as fundamental to sustainable development and social justice.
“FIDA Bauchi remains resolutely dedicated to wielding the instrument of the law to defend her rights, elevate her well-being and secure a brighter future,” the statement added.
