The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nigeria, Adamawa Branch, on Thursday sensitised schoolgirls in Yola to their rights and career opportunities.

The event was organised to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, with the theme: “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls”.

Mrs Lukna Dodo, Chairperson of FIDA in the state, said the programme was designed to encourage girls to become confident, educated and responsible members of society.

She said the event featured a “Know Your Rights” session and career talks aimed at inspiring female students to pursue their ambitions while understanding their legal and social rights.

Dodo said the day also provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women, while advocating equal rights and opportunities for women and girls.

She urged the students to remain focused on their education and believe in their dreams, noting that girls had the right to quality education and the freedom to pursue careers of their choice.

According to her, professionals, including a medical doctor, police officer, engineer and teacher, were invited to share their experiences and guide the students on possible career paths.

The chairperson said the presence of accomplished female professionals at the event was intended to mentor and inspire the students.

Also speaking, Dr Habiba Bakari, Chairperson of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Adamawa Chapter, said many women across Sub-Saharan Africa continued to face social and economic challenges.

Bakari emphasised the need for women and girls to be aware of their rights and to seek justice whenever those rights were violated.

She said the initiative formed part of efforts to empower girls through education, mentorship and awareness of their rights in line with the global campaign for gender equality.

Miss Dired David, a student, expressed appreciation to the organisers for creating a platform that encouraged girls to pursue their aspirations.

She urged her classmates to remain focused and determined in achieving their dreams. (NAN)
