The North East Health Awareness Forum (NEHCAF) has expressed deep concern and called for a thorough investigation into the alleged failure of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to receive adequate funding from its 2025 capital budget.
According to the forum, out of the N218 billion appropriated for capital expenditure in the health sector, only N36 million was reportedly released to the ministry.
In statement made available to journalists in Bauchi yesterday, the chairman of NEHCAF, Abdullahi Ahmad, and the secretary, Ummu Kulsum Rabiu, said the forum was reacting to reports in national dailies which quoted the minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, as mentioning the amount.
“Our attention has been drawn to publications in various national newspapers attributing a statement to the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate, where he disclosed that out of the N218 billion appropriated for capital projects in the health sector, only N36 million has been released to the ministry,” the statement said.
The forum described the revelation as shocking and alarming, noting that such a huge disparity in budget release raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the effective management of healthcare resources in Nigeria.
“The health sector is critical to the well-being of Nigerians. Discrepancies of this magnitude in funding allocation and release threaten the successful implementation of ongoing and future health projects, with grave implications for healthcare delivery nationwide,” the forum stated.
NEHCAF stressed that the minister’s disclosure underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation into the budgetary and funding processes within the health sector to ensure that appropriated funds are released and utilised efficiently.
“We call on the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to investigate this matter and ensure accountability in the management of public health finances,” the statement added.
The forum further emphasised that under a democratic system, citizens deserve a well-funded and properly equipped healthcare system capable of meeting their needs.
NEHCAF reaffirmed its commitment to advocating reforms that would guarantee not only proper budgetary allocations but also the timely and transparent utilisation of funds for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The Forum also urged stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organisations, and the media, to work together to address the funding challenges in the health sector.
“Together, we can ensure that the promise of quality and accessible healthcare is fulfilled for every Nigerian,” the statement concluded.
